As one of the original colonies, Massachusetts is an old-school state full of historic sites and markers throughout its towns. Located south of Boston on the South Shore, Plymouth is one of the most enchanting and historic towns in Massachusetts and a place everyone should make a point of visiting. Founded in 1620, Plymouth, Massachusetts, is one of the nation's oldest townships. Today, the town is filled with charming historical sites that played important roles in the state's history, and I will share some of the best things to see and do here in Plymouth.

Of course, a trip to Plymouth must include a visit to the country's most famous rock. While much smaller than you'd ever imagine, this rock is said to mark the spot where the Pilgrims first set foot in their new home. You'll find it at the waterfront at Plymouth Memorial State Park.

The Mayflower II is also worth a visit. This iconic landmark in Massachusetts is a replica of the original and sits in Plymouth Harbor. Just seeing the size of the ship that famously made a trans-Atlantic crossing in the 1600s is awe-inspiring.

Did you know that the country's oldest continuously operated public museum is right here in Plymouth? Pilgrim Hall Museum opened in 1824 and shares the history of the Pilgrims' first landing here and the colony they started. The most famous attraction in Plymouth is the Plimoth Patuxet Museums. This is a living history museum that shows visitors what living in the Plymouth Colony was like back when it was a thing. It's been a popular attraction for field trips since I was a kid and it's worth visiting at any age to learn the stories of the Wampanoag who have lived here for thousands of years, as well as the English settlers. This museum has also won awards, including the USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Award for 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Known as "America's Hometown," Plymouth, Massachusetts, is always worth a visit. Aside from the historical sites, you should peruse the downtown area's shops, galleries, cafes, and restaurants.
