With all its history and haunted lore, you can find some of the best Halloween towns in Massachusetts. From witchy Salem to a major amusement attraction in Agawam, there are plenty of ways to ring in the spooky season. Check out these five towns that can both terrify and delight you in the best ways imaginable.
1. Salem
We certainly couldn't write a list of the best Halloween towns in Massachusetts without including Salem! While every day seems to feel like Halloween here in Salem, it's especially the case during the entire month of October. Home to the infamous Witch Trials back in 1692, this town has its fair share of paranormal activity.
And since 1982, Salem has hosted its Haunted Happenings throughout the month of October. During this time, thousands of visitors flock to the city to partake in Halloween parties, events, parades, fairs, walking tours, and more! It's considered one of the biggest Halloween celebrations in the world.
2. North Adams
As home to the allegedly haunted Hoosac Tunnel, North Adams can certainly be a creepy place to visit in October. Construction of the 4.75-mile-long tunnel was completed in 1875 and, at the time, it was the second longest in the world. However, during construction, numerous workers died and the tunnel was given the gruesome nickname, "Bloody Pit."
3. Chatham
The charming Cape Cod town of Chatham is an incredibly fun and family-friendly place to visit during the Halloween season. It hosts an annual Pumpkin People in the Park event with some of the most creative pumpkin displays you can imagine. The town also has an Oktoberfest towards the end of the month.
4. Agawam
Agawam is home to Six Flags New England, the amusement park that provides plenty of adrenaline-pumping fun. Did you know, however, that it's quite a scary place to be during the Halloween season? It's true!
On select days and nights between late September and early November, Six Flags hosts its annual Fright Fest. Enjoy a good fright by taking a ride in the dark, making your way through a haunted house, or screaming in fear as you run away from a zombie or some other ghastly creature.
5. Fall River
Lizzie Borden took an ax...we all know the nursery rhyme. After all, it was created sometime after one of the most grisly double homicides in American history. While the Borden House still stands, and has been turned into a lovely, yet haunted, bed and breakfast, it's quite a frightening place to take a tour of come October.
