Maryland's small towns really have it all, don't they? A fascinating history, breathtaking natural landscape, charming storefronts, and welcoming locals. That's certainly the case with Chesapeake City, a teeny tiny Eastern Shore community that's often overlooked but shouldn't be. Today, we're headed there to explore all that this town has to offer, and we'd like you to join us in learning more about Chesapeake City, Maryland.
The moment you drive over the bridge and arrive at Chesapeake City, you'll find yourself absolutely charmed by all that this town has to offer, especially its canal-side beauty. Its modern history dates back to the establishment of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in 1824. Construction on the 14-mile canal was completed in 1829, and it stretches from the Port of Baltimore to the Port of Philadelphia, remaining in use as a major shipping route to this day. In 1919, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took over the canal and, over the next several decades, expanded its width from 66 feet to 450 feet to accommodate larger ships. Today, Chesapeake City is the only town in the state that's situated on a commercial canal.
One of the most charming parts of Chesapeake City is the historic architecture. The 19th-century homes and buildings have been beautifully preserved, making them the perfect backdrop for your small-town day trip adventures. The most notable landmark in town is the Bethel Bridge Lighthouse along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. This 1820s reconstructed lighthouse was one of six deactivated along the canal in 1927; it is now part of the C&D Canal Museum.
When you're ready for a bite to eat, the Chesapeake Inn Restaurant & Marina is a fabulous option thanks to its waterfront setting, tiki bar, and fantastic seafood options, including crab cakes. Another great place to stop is Bayheads Brewing Company for local beer and a fun, lively atmosphere. For shopping in downtown Chesapeake City, stop by The Mercantile at Back Creek for gifts, Chick's for clothing and jewelry, and Chesapeake Candy Works for a sweet treat.
