If we had a nickel for every time we drove through a small Maine town on our way to another destination and thought, "I should come back and spend some time here!" we'd have enough money to buy our own island in Casco Bay. The bad news is that we haven't been setting aside nickels. But, the good news is that there's one town that we DO always stop in. You've probably heard of it since it's one of our most special towns and is named after a country. And, if you've ever driven out to Western Maine, there's a chance you've spent some time there. We're talking about Norway, a special place that just might be the best town in Maine.
Norway is located along Route 26 and Route 118, near Lake Pennesseewassee.
It's home to a wonderful downtown area that comes with a true local feel, while also offering lots to do.
In addition to downtown, Norway's proximity to the lake means there's lots of fun to be had outdoors.
Norway was incorporated in 1797 and many who first moved to the town were Revolutionary War soldiers.
And the beauty is typical of Maine's small towns.
Our favorite thing about Norway is that you can stay for a week and enjoy the outdoors, or simply drive down Main Street and stop through some of these great places...
Norway Brewing Company offers up craft beer and homemade food that's so good -- get the fries!
Cafe Nomad is a mainstay and features awesome coffee and local food.
It also offers free wifi for those who just can't get off the grid!
For those who love both knitting AND drinking, Fiber & Vine is one of the most unique stores not only in Norway, but maybe all of Maine!
Come stock up on yarn and a few bottles of wine to drink while you knit yourself a hat for the winter.
You've seen these all over the state, but we bet you didn't know this fun fact...
... Norway Savings Bank first opened in 1872. At that point the only employee was a cashier who was also the janitor and bookkeeper. The flagship location is located in... you guessed it! Right on Main Street in Norway.
No matter what you decide to do in Norway, we recommend a visit!
