The Mysterious Kentucky Road You Absolutely Must Drive At Least Once

Route 77 in Kentucky offers a scenic and mysterious drive through enchanting wilderness, rock formations, and the unique Nada Tunnel.

Kentucky has some major love for backroads. Luckily, our state has a seemingly endless number of scenic drives. Some of these take you through horse country, some have you climbing a mountain, and then there's this one that features plenty of mystery. Route 77 in Kentucky isn't a very long road, but it takes you through enchanting wilderness, rock formations, and even a mysterious one-lane tunnel. It's so unique that it's truly a Kentucky destination that everyone should experience at least once.

Kentucky Route 77 is mostly known for the Nada Tunnel, which you'll find in the middle of this 14-mile drive.

But the road is actually filled with mystery and all sorts of natural wonders and beauty.

Route 77 is lovely all year long but is especially intriguing when the fog is settling or the leaves are thick.

You'll reach 77 most likely from Bert T Combs Mountain Parkway and then head east on the highway. The road then winds through this lush area of Kentucky, where Daniel Boone once explored and many continue to seek out adventure.

Given you're headed toward Red River Gorge, you'd expect to see some interesting rock formations, and you definitely will.

Route 77 also follows the Red River, so you'll be able to catch scenes like the one below as you drive.

You may even wish to take the time to pull over and get a closer look at this scenic river that also has many rocks to sit on and small pools to take a dip.

Rocks jut out over the highway and are often overcome by foliage.

Throughout the drive, it seems as if the forest is ever so slowly trying to reclaim what it once covered.

Bu the most mysterious and well-known feature of this drive is definitely Nada Tunnel.

Formerly a railway tunnel, it is only 900-feet long, but it's only one lane and your heart will surely pound as you make your way through.

It's known as the Gateway to Red River Gorge and acts as almost a test to see if you can handle the adventure that awaits you on the other side.

Although the drive along Route 77 is worth a trip on its own, there is plenty to experience in this area of Kentucky and one must-see feature can be found within Natural Bridge State Resort Park.

If you make your way from 77 to Route 11, another scenic drive in the forest, you will find yourself at this incredible state park. So go ahead and make a trip of it and cross a drive on this mysterious Kentucky road off your bucket list.
