One Of The Most Unique Towns In America, Murray Is Perfect For A Day Trip In Kentucky

Kentucky has some of the most charming towns in the country. While each and every one of Kentucky's locales are worth visiting, there's something just extra special about Murray. Named the "Friendliest Small Town in America" by Rand McNally and USA Today, Murray is a gem of a town that's a pleasure to visit, and makes for a postcard-perfect day trip in Kentucky.

The small town of Murray is located in the southwestern part of Kentucky and has earned numerous accolades as one of the best towns in the state.

Murray is a place that's proud of its history. Its oldest buildings are preserved and celebrated, as evidenced in this jubilant mural in downtown Murray.

Stroll down Main Street to see some Murray's oldest houses, like the glorious Higgins House, which is depicted in the above mural.

Located in the heart of the town square, the Murray Inn and Art Gallery is an absolute delight. This unique little hotel has its own art gallery, and original artwork can be found in each of its guest rooms.

One of the things that's garnered Murray quite a bit of attention is the Calloway County Quilt Trail.

This unique trail features more than 60 quilts, displayed at some of the most charming and historic barns in the Bluegrass State.

Of course, the town is perhaps best-known as the home of Murray State University, a wonderful public college with an idyllic campus and a student population of around 10,000.

As a college town, Murray has some seriously crave-worthy restaurants, including Matt B's Main Street Pizza. Order by the slice, and don't forget to add a basket of their delicious breadsticks with honey butter.

Rudy’s on the Square is Murray's oldest restaurant, and this classic diner serves up the best biscuits and gravy in Kentucky.

And come springtime, the local Dairy Queen is the hottest spot in town, with lines often forming down the block. But it's worth the wait: Murray's Dairy Queen is the best in the country -- it's a fact.

Known as a "gateway" to Kentucky Lake, the Eggner's Ferry Bridge crosses over the eponymous body of water, and is a delightful place to walk and soak up the lovely lake views.

Of course, being so close to Kentucky's superlative lake, outdoor enthusiasts will find a lot to do love about Murray.
