We love the Sunflower State, but it's not really known for its beaches or bodies of water - plains and farmland, sure, or the gently rolling Flint Hills... we've even got swamps in Kansas! We're not really thought of as a particularly beachy state, but that doesn't mean there aren't great coastal cities in Kansas. One of our favorites is Topeka - as the capital of the state and one of the larger cities within Kansas, it's a place that most Kansans are familiar with, but it often escapes notice that it is, in fact, a coastal city. There are so many things to do in Topeka, Kansas, as it's home to Lake Shawnee - one of the most-visited destinations in Kansas - and it's a beautiful place with plenty of other attractions.
Topeka is home to over 125,000 residents. As the capital city of Kansas, it's got countless attractions, including delicious restaurants, fun museums, and beautiful parks.
However, today we're focusing on the coastal area around Lake Shawnee.
The city has recently re-landscaped this area, planting tons of flowers. It's such a charming place for a stroll by the water!
In addition to gardens, the recreation area surrounding Lake Shawnee offers fishing, swimming, and boating, plus there are sand volleyball and tennis courts.
There's even a campground here if you need to spend more than a single afternoon around this beautiful Kansas lake.
The paved walking trail around the lake spans about 6.8 miles. It's an easy loop that's stroller and wheelchair-friendly. It's a great way to check out the area and explore all that Lake Shawnee has to offer.
With so many other attractions in Topeka, it's easy to let the lake pass you by, but pay Lake Shawnee a visit next time you're in the area.
