Get Off The Freeway And Onto This Scenic Back Road Between Marquette and Guttenberg, Iowa

One of the great things about driving is that you're the master of your own fate. Sure, you can head straight to your destination - but what's the fun in doing that all the time? When there's time to spare and the weather is nice, it's the perfect time to get off the beaten path and explore some of the most beautiful spots on the backroads. My personal favorite of Iowa's scenic byways is the River Bluffs Scenic Byway, which starts on the Mississippi River at Marquette and takes a winding route around to explore some of Iowa's most beautiful small towns before winding up back on the river at Guttenberg. The whole route will take about two hours of driving to make a full circle, but that's only if you drive straight through - and with sites like these along the way, you'll want to carve out a whole day for this adventure.

River Bluffs Scenic Byway is an adventure that neatly fits into a day of driving but is well worth taking time to explore.

Your journey begins along the Mississippi river in Marquette and McGregor, which are close together.

There's plenty to do before you even get on the road, as there are destinations like Eagles Landing Winery right here, in case you want a quick meal.

In nearby McGregor, that's where you'll find Pikes Peak State Park, with Iowa's best overlook.

As you leave the city, the incredible views along this byway are well worth stopping to enjoy.

As well as some of the state's best waterfront recreation spots. This can be a fast drive, or a leisurely all-day adventure.

Elkader isn't on the main loop, but it is absolutely worth driving to midway through your trip to explore the historic sites here.

Your trip ends in Guttenberg, typically known as one of Iowa's best German towns, and the river views here are stunning. Keep an eye out for the famous riverboat!
