This Hidden Park and Trail in Iowa Is a True Local Secret
This Iowa park and its trails aren't nearly as popular as neighboring parks. Locals would like to keep it that way.
Some spots manage to stay below the proverbial radar, even in popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts, like Decorah, Iowa. Folks flock to this river town in the northeast corner of the Hawkeye State and its many beautiful parks for the numerous hiking, cross-country skiing, paddling, and singletrack opportunities they offer. One park, however, a longtime favorite among locals, is often overlooked in favor of its more visited nearby neighbors. Next time you're struggling to find a parking spot for a hike at Dunning's Spring, you may want to skip it for the time being and head over to Palisades Park, which is less than 2 miles farther east.
You'll find Palisades Park on the east side of Decorah, just across the Upper Iowa River from the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds. From downtown, you can reach Palisades by crossing the river on the Fifth Street bridge and turning right on Ice Cave Road. The 105-acre park sits on a steep, densely forested bluff above the Upper Iowa, which affords scenic views of the river valley and across my handsome hometown of Decorah.
Along the top of the bluff, you'll find thoughtfully situated clearings and overlooks with benches, picnic tables, and fire rings to enjoy with family or friends. If you're looking for a more active outing, though, you won't be disappointed: The park is laced with more than 4 miles of trails shared by hikers and singletrack enthusiasts, as well as a narrow, one-way loop for vehicles that is also frequented by folks on foot or bicycles. The park's trails connect with each other and also link up with trails to Ice Cave State Preserve and Dunning's Spring Park.
In winter (November to April), the road closes to vehicle traffic, and it's groomed for cross-country skiing, as snow permits. Skiers can explore the park's winter wonderland on designated 1-mile and 2.8-mile loops, the latter of which takes you through much of Palisades.
The scenery and the views are beautiful any time of year, but as you may imagine, the fall foliage can be quite spectacular. The last time I visited Palisades Park was on a June Saturday in the late morning. Only one other car was there during my entire visit. Later, I stopped by Dunning's Spring, and the lot was nearly full, with the narrow road up to the waterfall crowded with visitors.
Palisades Park is a true local gem that rarely sees the crowds of more popular, nearby parks, while offering excellent recreational opportunities and stunning views. You won't find robust trail guides on AllTrails, but you can download a map from Decorah Parks and Recreation. Have you visited this relatively undiscovered park in Iowa?
