According to the Iowa Wine Growers Association, Iowa is home to more than 100 wineries, and while that may pale in comparison to California’s Napa Valley, it’s still impressive for a state most people associate with cornfields. And while you will find many Iowa wineries in the center of the state, it’s along the eastern border where you will find the next Napa Valley. With scenic river views, plenty of small-town charm, and several wineries within driving distance, Dubuque, Iowa might just be the best wine destination in the Midwest.

With approximately 58,000 residents, Dubuque may not be considered small, but it has both the charm of a small town and the amenities you’ll find in a larger city. The town is surrounded by natural beauty and is full of history. You’ll also find several superb wineries in the area. 1. Barrel Head Winery

2. Stone Cliff Winery

Located in the gorgeous and historic Dubuque Star Brewery building, this family owned and operated winery not only produces scrumptious wines but offers an enchanting setting for everything from large events to a gathering of friends. Take in views of the Mississippi River from their outdoor wine garden if the weather is nice.

3. Park Farm Winery

Established in 2005, this family owned and operated business set amongst the rolling hills near Bankston, Iowa — just west of Dubuque — is simply stunning. On Park Farm’s eleven-acre vineyard, they grow specific ‘cold climate’ grapes that are able to withstand the harsh Midwestern winters and produce great wine. There's truly no better day trip destination out there.

4. Sunset Ridge Winery

From sweet apple, rhubarb, and cherry wines to dry red wines and everything in between, you’re sure to find a wine you love at Sunset Ridge Winery. The grounds are picture-perfect, and you can even order a pizza to accompany your wine.

5. Sinnipee Valley Vineyard & Winery

Though technically located across the border in Wisconsin, Sinnipee Valley Vineyard & Winery is found just 10 miles from Dubuque. The property is gorgeous, and their dessert wines are particularly impressive.

6. Iowa Grape Vines Winery

Whether you prefer a light, sweet white or a deep, dark, and dry red, you’ll find a vino to suit your taste at Iowa Grape Vines Winery. They also make and bottle old-fashioned root beer as well as many types of wine jellies and jams. Yum!

7. Promise Land Winery

Located in the Southern hills of Guttenberg on the Great River Road just 45 minutes from Dubuque, PromiseLand Winery is home to a tasting room, event room, and five boutiques. Can you imagine a better way to spend an afternoon than with wine and shopping?

8. Tycoga Vineyard & Winery

These handcrafted, local wines are affordable and take between eight weeks and two years after harvest to be ready for the tasting room.
