Indiana has more than its share of rumored hauntings and paranormal activity. But if you ask anyone about the most haunted small town in the Hoosier State, you're likely to get one answer: Mitchell Indiana.

Mitchell is a charming little city in Lawrence County with a population of less than 4,500 people.

At first glance, you might wonder why a small city this adorable could possibly be haunted.

But step away from the charming main streets, and you'll realize that this sleepy little town is home to a place that the Travel Channel called the 4th Most Terrifying Place in America.

We're talking, of course, about Whispers Estate.

Whispers Estate was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and was purchased by Dr. John and Jessie Gibbons.

The couple adopted several orphaned children, but unfortunately, they did not get a happy ending.

Rumor has it that one of the couple's adopted children, Rachael, started a fire in the front parlor that burned her to death.

A 10-month-old little girl, Elizabeth, later died in the master bedroom of unknown causes. Mrs. Gibbons also died here from double pneumonia (and from grief, some say).

The list of scary encounters here is a mile long. Some see poor Rachael running around the house, while others can smell baby powder from sweet little Elizabeth.

The house is most well-known for the "whispering walls" and rattling doorknobs, and those who have dared to sleep in the master bedroom have often woken up from uncontrollable coughing. Some even claim to have phantom scratches on their bodies when they leave. Dr. Gibbons was a prominent doctor in town, so dozens of his patients died inside the home as well.

We're willing to admit that the rumors of Whispers Estate being haunted could be false, but we're not willing to spend the night and find out.
