The Scenic Byway In Hawaii You Have To Travel At Least Once
The Honoapi'ilani Highway in Maui offers stunning coastal views, whale sightings, and historic towns, making it a must-drive route.
Everywhere you look, you'll find natural beauty in Hawaii. While we complain about the traffic, especially on Maui, we also have to admit that the scenic drives just can't be beat. Here's a popular highway on Maui that everyone should travel at least once.
The Honoapi'ilani Highway (Hawaii Route 30) is a 35 mile stretch of highway in West Maui that you'll definitely want to take if you're into jaw-dropping views and occasional whale-sightings.
Your road trip down the Honoapi'ilani Hawaii begins in the rural town of Waikapū, with its plantation and fields. You'll proceed south before making your way around the western portion of the island.
Drive through a tunnel of trees, and a man-made tunnel that's 318 feet long near the village of Olowalu.
You'll drive past the historic little town of Lahaina, with its quaint buildings and huge banyan tree.
Gorgeous coastal views demand your attention. Keep your eyes on the road...and maybe bring a friend along to do some of the driving so you can gawk out the passenger side.
This 35-mile stretch should take just under an hour to drive, but you'll want to make plenty of stops along the way to explore the beaches, towns and hiking trails.
You'll pass some of the most touristy parts of Maui...just look past the sunbathing visitors and watch for whales out along the horizon.
You'll drive through Kapalua...
...and past several scenic bays, including Mokule'ia Bay with its stunning beaches.
Check out the surfers at Honolua Bay.
The Honoapi'ilani Highway ends at Honokohau Bay, but you can continue on along the Kahekili Highway to complete the circle back to Wailuku
