Washington, Georgia is the county seat of Wilkes County and was established back in 1780. This makes it one of the oldest towns in the entire state.
Part of what makes this small town so special is the history. With the original name of Heard’s Fort, Washington was at a time designated as the state capital during the American Revolutionary War.
It also is noted to be the town where the Confederacy voted to dissolve itself, thus effectively bringing to an end the American Civil War.
