One of our favorite small towns in Georgia is Hartwell. This little city is the county seat of Hart County in the northeast portion of the state and has a population of around 4,500 people. Hart County is the only county in Georgia named after a woman, and the city of Hartwell shares the county's namesake. Both are named after Nancy Morgan Hart, a Revolutionary War hero.
It's thought that much of Nancy Morgan Hart's supposed life is actually folklore. She was a housewife who was said to have killed several British soldiers during the war.
In total, Hartwell, GA spans about five square miles in area. It's not far from the South Carolina border and is also close to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
The city's historic downtown area has a number of charming boutique shops. It's such a delight to stroll through a historic small town like this.
Just walking through the city and admiring the beautiful historic homes is a lovely past time. There's a lot of interesting architecture in Hartwell!
Golfers will be delighted with the city, which is home to Cateechee, one of the top-rated golf courses in Northeast Georgia.
The city shares its name with Lake Hartwell, which is just a few short miles away and one of the most popular recreational lakes in the region.
