The Granite Capital Of Georgia Is One Of The Most Charming Small Towns You’ll Ever Visit

Whether you're in our northern region or near our coast, there are tons of amazing small towns in Georgia. Each has its own special qualities that make it noteworthy in its own way. One little town in Elbert County has a population of just over 4,600, but it's actually world-renowned for its granite production. Not only is Elberton considered the granite capital of Georgia, but it's also known as the granite capital of the world. It also happens to be a wonderful spot for a quiet day trip if you're looking to escape the city for a few hours. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Elberton, GA, Granite Capital of the World:

While the "Granite Capital of the World" title does not appear to have ever been officially designated, it is true that Elberton produces a lot of granite and has been doing so since the Civil War.

Perhaps the thing Elberton is best known for is no longer standing. The Georgia Guidestones were 19-foot-tall monuments that were carved with instructions to create an age of reason in humanity.

The Georgia Guidestones were destroyed by vandals in 2022, so you can no longer see them in person.

However, there's plenty more to explore in this small town! Richard B. Russell State Park is a 2,508-acre state park that includes a lake and an 18-hole golf course.

If you'd like to see another of the town's best-known granite structures, check out the Granite Bowl.

The stadium seats 20,000 and is made almost entirely out of granite. The scoreboard here was once used at UGA's Sanford Stadium.

You'll also want to visit the Elberton Granite Museum.

This free museum features exhibits on the history of granite quarries in Elberton and also includes statues and historical artifacts made of Elberton granite.
