When traveling in the summertime, I absolutely love to be near a body of water. Though it's not typically as hot or humid in New England as it can get in other regions of the country, it still feels absolutely blissful to relax in a small lake town in Connecticut. Next time you're seeking the perfect Nutmeg State day trip to enjoy a waterfront breeze, we've got just the spot: the town of Waterford.

Not only does this town literally have "water" in its name, but it's near two rivers and has prime Long Island Sound frontage. It's home to quite a few fun attractions, making it a wonderful place to visit for an afternoon ... or more. Check out all you can do on a summer day trip to Waterford, Connecticut.

What Makes This Small Connecticut Town So Unique

Waterford, Connecticut, actually received its name as an homage to Waterford, Ireland, but the hydro connotations are certainly fitting. Waterford is bordered on the west by the Niantic River, and parts of the town touch the Thames River in the east. It even borders the Long Island Sound, and is home to the tiny Brandegee Lake, a fishing lake.

One of the most popular attractions in Waterford is the magnificent Harkness Memorial State Park. This 230-acre park lies right along the coast and is one of the most stunning state parks in Connecticut.

Things to See and Do in Waterford, Connecticut

There are so many things to do in this underrated Connecticut lake town. Just a few miles away from Harkness Memorial, you'll find Waterford Town Beach, a small sandy shoreline on Long Island Sound. You'll feel as though you've booked a luxury vacation when you step onto the sand at this pristine beach.

The beach is officially open from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend, with swimming allowed in designated areas. It's open to the public—even to non-residents—but the entrance fees are higher for out-of-town visitors. Learn more from the Waterford Parks website.

If you'd prefer to see some greenery on your day trip, Waterford's Jordan Green is beautiful and exemplifies a quintessential New England town green. Here, you can visit Jordan Schoolhouse, built in the 1730s. It is now operated as a museum by the Waterford Historical Society, where you can take tours throughout the year.

And if you want something a little more of an adrenaline rush, Waterford has that, too. Check out the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, a 3/8-mile car racing track. The racing season here typically runs from late spring to early fall, but you can check out the full season at the Speedbowl website.

Without question, the best time to visit Waterford is in the summertime. Between the pristine lakes, the beach on the Long Island Sound, and ample outdoor activities, you'll never run out of refreshing and fun things to do here. Try to visit in May or later in the summer for less crowds. And if you're okay with a little chill in the air, come during the fall or spring to see beautiful foliage or blooms.

Just keep in mind that Waterford Town Beach and the rivers are all pretty chilly year-round, so if you're not into polar plunging, stay on the shore or in a boat.
