The Remote Small Town in Connecticut Locals Don’t Want You To Find

Scotland, Connecticut, is the birthplace of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, home to plenty of nature, and a quick drive from wineries.

In a state as densely populated as Connecticut, it can be difficult to find somewhere where you truly feel away from it all. We're a small state, but we have a relatively high population for our size, and it can feel like everyone is crammed into just a few large cities. Next time you're looking for a peaceful getaway in Connecticut, one great little town to check out is Scotland. This small town in Windham County has a population of more than 1,500, situated in a predominantly rural area with few surrounding large cities. It feels almost like a quaint step back in time to when the world seemed greener and things were less complicated.

Route 14 runs right through Scotland. This is a short road, spanning only a little over 24 miles in total, but the section through Scotland is quite scenic. Additionally, for a small town, there's a lot of history preserved here. For example, the Huntington Homestead Museum is the birthplace of Samuel Huntington. Huntington was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a prominent politician during the country's early days.

It should come as no surprise that this agricultural area is home to a few wineries. One of our favorites is The Vineyard at Hillyland. Additionally, a walk through the town's historic districts will show off even more stunning old architecture. I just love the look of quintessential old New England towns, don't you? For those who enjoy local agriculture and scenic countryside, visiting one of the nearby farms, like Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm, is a delightful way to spend an afternoon. Just 20 minutes east of Scotland, you can find fresh local produce and enjoy homemade goods at this farm.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are numerous parks in this area. For example, the Mohegan State Forest is a favorite destination. It's popular for its dense woodlands, hiking trails, and laid-back atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat into nature.

Next time you want to forget all your worries, head on up to Scotland, Connecticut, for a weekend of calm and relaxed fun. It might just be the most peaceful town in Connecticut. Feeling inspired? Try planning your own Connecticut trip using Only In Your State’s itinerary planner.
