The Connecticut Beach Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar
Sandwiched between the biggest tourist spots in the state, Old Saybrook is an amazing hidden beach town in Connecticut filled with surprises.
I haven't spent as much time in Connecticut as I have in my home of New Jersey, but it's easy for me to catch an Amtrak and head up there for a day or two for an event. Every time I've visited the Nutmeg State, I'm impressed—whether it's the New England-style food, the beautiful ocean views, or the great theater venues. One of the biggest surprises for me was when I visited the best hidden beach town in Connecticut: Old Saybrook. I was in town to see a show at the town's event venue, and I had a few hours to explore. That was enough time for me to fall in love with Old Saybrook's unique architecture and proximity to natural beauty. I'm going to make a point of visiting here during the summer, and once you experience it for yourself, I bet I won't be the town's only new fan.
What Makes This Coastal Town So Special

Old Saybrook is located on the Connecticut coast, which is serviced by both Amtrak and the Shore Line East commuter rail line. A thriving town of just over 10,000 people, it has a busy downtown, but during the summer, most people are headed for the beach. The Saybrook Point Marina is very popular for those seeking recreation on the water.

One of the top reasons people visit Old Saybrook is lighthouse watching. The town is home to two amazing lighthouses, both historic. The 1838 Lynde Point Lighthouse, pictured here, is located on private property and isn't open to the public, but it and the offshore 1886 Saybrook Breakwater Light make for amazing photo opportunities when you're hiking the beach.
Where to Eat and Stay in Old Saybrook
Old Saybrook has an amazing dining scene, with plenty of options for high-end seafood and Italian dining downtown and near the town's acclaimed theater, the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. However, my favorite spot has to be the affordable, retro Monkey Farm Cafe, a dive bar and diner that serves huge plates of classic food like pork chops and applesauce in a quirky environment. And a day in Old Saybrook isn't finished without a visit to Pursuit of Pastry for some of the best baked goods in Connecticut.

Most people who stay in Old Saybrook choose an Airbnb, but for those looking for a truly memorable stay to remember, the Saybrook Point Resort & Marina is one of the best luxury hotels in Connecticut. From the unique turn-of-the-century architecture to the on-site spa, it's a popular destination for honeymoons and anniversaries—and it's only minutes from the water.
