If you're looking for a day trip idea, less than an hour from Cincinnati, we've got the perfect spot for you. Unless you attended Miami University, you may not think of Oxford as much more than a college town. But it turns out that this town has something for everyone and it's a lovely place to visit any time of the year. Of course during the summer you'll find less crowds of college students, but each season has its charm in this picturesque college town.
Oxford is mainly known for Miami University, which happens to have one of the most beautiful campuses in the entire country. The university and town are known for the plethora of red brick buildings, as well as the charming uptown stretch of High Street, that also happens to be brick.
Even if you have no interest in the university, there is plenty to do in Oxford. Plan on taking some time to at least walk around the campus, which is just breathtaking to explore. The Formal Gardens pictured below is a lesser known section of campus that is definitely worth a visit.
You definitely won't go hungry when visiting Oxford. College towns are known for amazing, hole-in-the-wall eateries, and Oxford is no exception. You absolutely have to try a steamed bagel sandwich from Bagel & Deli and save room for one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches ever next door at Skipper's. These are two classic options and there are several others that offer diverse menus and cold drinks.
The park in Uptown Oxford hosts several events throughout the year. Every Saturday morning from May through September, a large farmers market is set up from 9am to noon.
The park also holds concerts and other festivals throughout the year, especially in the summer. The park is right in the middle of uptown, so you can get some takeout from one of the local restaurants and enjoy the park.
Oxford is great to explore with your family and on a hot summer day, make sure you bring some extra clothes and a towel to splash around in the fountain. There's also a grassy area to run and animal statues to admire.
Oxford is such a picturesque small town that at times it seems unreal. Whether you visit during Miami's homecoming or a quiet summer weekday, you'll fall in love with this college town that is full of character and sits just a short drive from Cincinnati.
