Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Southern California Before Fall Ends
These charming mountain towns in Southern California know how to impress when autumn arrives each year.
If you are like me, when you think of getaways in Southern California, sand, sunshine, and ocean waves are at the front of your mind. However, by always venturing to the beach, you miss out on one of SoCal’s most incredible destinations—its mountain towns. We have been blessed with some of the most charming, beautiful small towns nestled in the trees, and each fall, these communities shine. The following are seven charming mountain towns in Southern California that I recommend you place at the top of your fall bucket list this year. Each one is not only beautiful, but home to countless activities to fill a day, weekend, or even a full week with autumn spirit.
1. Crestline

Crestline is one of the largest towns on our list, but we couldn’t leave it off—autumn here is stunning! Located in the San Bernardino Mountains and along the shores of Lake Gregory, this town of approximately 11,600 people feels far away from the hustle of SoCal’s busiest cities. However, it’s only a short drive away. Here, you can spend a fall day fishing or visit a local vineyard for a wine tasting. If you want to surround yourself with vibrant fall colors, consider the 1.8-mile Heart Rock Loop Trail.
2. Idyllwild
After just a single visit to this mountain town, you may find yourself visiting Idyllwild year after year. Located in the San Jacinto Mountains, Idyllwild is known for its incredible forest scenery, outdoor activities, and slow pace—it checks off all the boxes for the perfect fall getaway destination. Spend time visiting the local shops and restaurants in town, or visit Lake Hemet, one of the most beautiful places to view fall foliage near Idyllwild and a great day trip destination.
3. Wrightwood
Located approximately 6,200 feet in elevation is one of our favorite fall towns in Southern California—Wrightwood. While there is plenty to do in town, I recommend spending time outdoors, enjoying the cooler weather and the fall foliage views along one of the nearby hiking trails, especially the Pacific Crest Trail. You may want to stop at Mountain High Resort for mountain biking, a round of disc golf, or a scenic chair lift ride. Plus, if you time your visit just right, you can also attend Oktoberfest, one of the largest annual festivals in Wrightwood.
4. Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is a popular getaway destination, especially in the winter and summer months, but there’s something extra magical about this area in the fall. During this time of the year, Big Bear Lake is a little less crowded, the weather is delightful, and autumn’s colors are breathtaking. If you are seeking a heart-racing adventure, take a ride on the alpine slide at Magic Mountain Recreation Area. Or, simply enjoy a cozy, quiet, and romantic fall getaway with a stay at one of the many local vacation rentals or lodges.
5. Julian
You will fall in love with autumn before you even arrive in the small town of Julian. The scenic drive into this community in San Diego County is unforgettable when the fall colors are at their peak—this is paradise for leaf peepers. Julian is also known for its incredible apple pies, so make sure to visit many of the local restaurants and bakeries for a slice or two. You may even want to add one of the local orchards or cideries to your itinerary for even more delicious goods.
6. Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead is a gorgeous waterfront community in the San Bernardino Mountains, and is a place that will immediately put you in the autumn spirit. Spend time walking around Lake Arrowhead Village for exceptional shopping and dining, and drive along Highway 18, also known as the Rim of the World Highway, for incredible fall foliage views. The nearby Heaps Peak Arboretum is a gorgeous stop along this scenic drive if you want to surround yourself with vibrant colors on foot.
7. Ojai
Nestled in a valley near the Topatopa Mountains and northwest of Los Angeles is the town of Ojai. This town of approximately 7,500 people is a true outdoor lover’s paradise, especially during the fall when the nearby hiking trails are colorful, fishing and birdwatching at Lake Casitas is exceptional, and more. If you want a more relaxing fall escape, visit one of the local spas or an award-winning winery in the area. And, of course, if you time your visit just right, attend Ojai Fall Fest, a three-day family festival with live music, carnival rides, vendors, and delicious food.
There’s nothing quite like the best beaches in Southern California, but we will always have a special place in our hearts for SoCal’s mountain towns. The only hard part is choosing which town to visit first.
