A Mansion With a Mysterious Past

Let’s head back to 1928 when oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny constructed the manor as a gift for his son, Ned. With 55 lavish rooms, this 46,000-square-foot Tudor Revival masterpiece features sweeping staircases, ornate fireplaces, gorgeous wood-paneled walls, and marble floors, allowing you to ponder your reflection. 

Shrouded in mystery, this opulent home was the scene of a most curious murder. Only months after Ned and his family moved into their estate, both Ned and his longtime friend Hugh Plunkett were discovered dead in one of the guest bedrooms. Reported as a murder-suicide, the case was never solved. Rumors surround the double death, fueling decades of questions and keeping the estate in a ghostly aura that fascinates visitors to this day.   

A Public Park in Beverly Hills

Today, Greystone Mansion and Gardens is owned by the City of Beverly Hills and open to the public as a park. It’s one of the city’s best-kept secrets, and one of the top free attractions in all of Los Angeles. The grounds are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and visitors are welcome to wander the beautifully landscaped gardens, explore its peaceful walking paths, and admire panoramic views of the Los Angeles skyline.

The gardens alone are worth the visit. Immaculately maintained, they feature romantic courtyards, koi ponds, cascading fountains, and an abundance of native plants and flowers. Benches are thoughtfully placed throughout, inviting guests to linger and enjoy the scenery. While the grounds of Greystone Mansion are free on non-filming days, the mansion itself is not regularly open to the public, though special events and guided tours are available, offering chances to step foot inside. Early in the spring, the mansion celebrates Music in the Mansion, a ticketed event that features various musical artists' performances while you immerse yourself in the fantasy of the French Renaissance.

Additionally, there are theatrical performances, various seasonal events, photography workshops, and art exhibitions, giving locals and tourists alike more chances to engage with the historic landmark.
