The Up-and-Coming City in Alaska That’s Perfectly Sized

When visiting Alaska, the list of cities and small towns to explore is long. There are many bucket-list-worthy destinations throughout The Last Frontier that you really can’t go wrong no matter where you choose for your next adventure. Wasilla is one of these special destinations in Alaska that is perfect in many ways — including its size. With a population of approximately 10,000 people, this Alaska city is not too large and not too small. It’s perfect.

I’m not the only one who thinks Wasilla, Alaska is wonderful — people are flocking to this incredible destination. In fact, Wasilla is the fastest-growing city in Alaska. This town has something for everyone and is truly a remarkable place whether you are searching for a new day trip destination or a new place to reside.

Wasilla is located in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, on the northern point of the Cook Inlet. Despite only 10,000 residents, it is the fourth largest city in Alaska. It was named after Chief Wasilla, a local Dena'ina Athabascan Indian Chief, and it did not become an incorporated city until 1974.

Wasilla is best known as the headquarters for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. I recommend you stop in and browse the museum and grab some race souvenirs or memorabilia at the headquarters. In the summer, you can even experience a sled dog cart ride.

Outdoor lovers will never want to leave the Wasilla area as there is much to see and do. This city is situated between Wasilla Lake and Lake Lucille, both known for their incredible fishing. However, there are also camping, hiking, and paddling opportunities as well as excellent wildlife observation. If you are looking for a family-friendly and easy afternoon adventure, consider walking along the Wasilla Creek Boardwalk. This 0.8-mile boardwalk takes you along Wasilla Creek and to a small platform where you can admire gorgeous views.

I also recommend you spend some time exploring Hatcher Pass, which is one of the most beautiful places in Alaska. This mountain pass is where you’ll find even more breathtaking hikes and lakes. It is also home to Independence Mine State Historical Park, an abandoned gold mine in the Talkeetna Mountains.  

History buffs will also find plenty to love in Wasilla as there are multiple museums in town, including the Wasilla Museum and the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry. And when you just want to hang out in town with friends and family, there are many local stores, restaurants, and breweries you don’t want to miss.

As I mentioned before, Wasilla is a special place in Alaska that is perfect in many ways. After just one visit, you’ll quickly see why it is an up-and-coming city in Alaska. It is a destination that is hard to leave.
