From the Gulf Coast beaches to the Mentone mountains, fall in love with the most breathtaking views on this epic Alabama road trip.

Nothing beats a road trip through Alabama! I love feeling that sense of freedom while cruising through the small towns and major cities across the state. Driving through each destination feels like you’re discovering something new along the way. From the gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches to the peaceful Mentone mountains, get ready to soak up some of Alabama's most beautiful outdoor spots.

Because the road trip is just over nine hours long and covers approximately 500 miles, it's perfect for a weekend adventure. To make it easy, I made suggestions for places to stay and to grab something to eat. Additionally, I included this interactive Google Maps so that you can make changes to your route as you travel through the state. Now, if you're ready, let’s gas up the car for this epic road trip through Alabama.

1. Gulf Coast Beaches

Here in Alabama, we're well known for our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches. Your road trip will begin in Gulf Shores, which happens to be one of Alabama's most popular beach towns. While here, you'll have access to a variety of outdoor attractions, including Gulf State Park, which offers all kinds of recreational activities. Want to stretch your legs while at the park? Hike the two-mile Beach Mouse Bypass Trail that meanders along an elevated boardwalk with serene water views. It's the perfect trail for the entire family.

2. Lake Martin

Your next stop will be Lake Martin. Lake Martin, which is located in Tallapoosa, Elmore, and Coosa counties, covers more than 41,000 acres and is one of the largest man-made lakes in the U.S. If you develop an appetite while you’re in the area, head to Alexander City. Here, you’ll find Kowaliga Restaurant, a local hot spot known as the best lakeside dining on Lake Martin. Stop by for the heartwarming comfort food but stay for the stunning waterfront views.

3. Mount Cheaha

Following a short drive, you'll arrive at Mount Cheaha. Mount Cheaha is Alabama's highest natural point and offers the most breathtaking views. A great place to experience the gorgeous mountains is Cheaha State Park in Delta. You'll want to carve out time to see the views along the Rock Garden via Lake Trail. After you checked out the scenic spots inside the park, by now, I think you should be tired. The good news? You can spend the night in this luxurious safari tent right inside the park. Amenities include a king bed, A/C, Wi-Fi, and everything you need for a comfy stay.

4. Turkey Creek Nature Preserve

Your next stop will be Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Pinson. Covering nearly 500 acres, this is one of Alabama's most beautiful outdoor spots. On a nice day, pack a picnic and enjoy lunch by the water, or bring your bathing suit and go for a dip. Or you can hike through the breathtaking wilderness, soaking up all the beautiful scenery.

5. Little River Canyon National Preserve

From Turkey Creek, you'll then drive north to Little River Canyon National Preserve in Fort Payne. Little River Canyon National Preserve, which covers more than 15,000 acres, is one of Alabama's most-visited outdoor attractions. One of its main features is the waterfall along Little River, which is often named as the nation's longest mountaintop river. Between the woodland trails, the waterfall, and picnic spots, this is the kind of scenic destination where you could easily spend an entire day.

6. Mentone

Your final stop will be the town of Mentone, which is located just outside of Fort Payne. Because Mentone has the highest elevation of any Alabama town, its views can't be beat! Over the years, this mountain town has also become one of Alabama's top vacation spots. In fact, it's one of our favorite towns for a day trip in Alabama. Here, you'll find the cutest walkable town with shops, restaurants, and lots of options for places to spend the night. If you ask me, there is no better destination to end this epic road trip in Alabama.
