We Texans tend to prefer simplicity where food is concerned, but there are exceptions to every rule. The Salty Donut, a gourmet donut shop based in Miami, is one of them. A new location is opening up in Austin soon, and it definitely belongs on your food bucket list.
Based in Miami, The Salty Donut already has one Texas location in Dallas' Bishop Arts District. The popular breakfast joint is expanding into Austin next, however the exact opening date is TBD.
Don't expect many of the standard donut flavors you're used to. Instead, the menu is peppered with unique flavors like horchata, brown butter + salt, and even Texas chocolate sheet cake.
The donuts have either a cake or brioche base, the latter left to rise for a glorious 24 hours. You'll also see donut bars, which more so resemble cannolis than donuts - but that just means extra room for filling!
Just look at that beautiful cross-section shot. We've never seen a fluffier, more pillow-like donut from anywhere else in Texas.
Mini donuts are also available, perfect for trying a little bit of everything. Flavors rotate seasonally, but rest-assured they're always scrumptious.
Speaking of seasons, The Salty Donut takes holidays pretty seriously. From Valentine's Day to Halloween and everything in-between, the shop proudly creates themed treats for all occasions.
Don't forget to order some coffee along with your donuts! It's a house-made brew, and you can really taste the difference.
The Austin location will be at 2000 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704. Visit the donut shop's website or Facebook page to learn more.
