Believe it or not, one of the best botanical gardens in Texas is located in a town with a population of under 20,000. Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is a world-class destination that delights visitors of all ages with its beautiful flowers, serene nature trails, thriving bird population, and annual holiday events.
Most people wouldn't expect to find a botanical garden in Orange, which is part of what makes Shangri La so special. This 250-acre space is tucked away along the Adams Bayou, offering a peaceful escape for all who walk its grounds.
Admission to the gardens is always free. Guests enjoy nature trails that meander through lush greenery and various themed gardens, and there's always something new and colorful blooming.
The gardens are so perfectly manicured, you won't believe your eyes. And since flowers and shrubs change with the seasons, you never know just what you'll see.
I personally love the greenhouse area the most. It's full of unique plants, including trees whose branches snake and wrap around anything in their paths.
Birdwatchers love the heronry blind, from which you can spot all sorts of feathered friends (and maybe a gator or two, if you're lucky!).
Speaking of gators, you'll almost certainly see some when you peer over the viewing platform that looks out on the bayou.
Shangri La also hosts special events throughout the year, including its famed Scarecrow Festival in September and October.
The festival takes visitors on a stroll through dozens of scarecrows, each one designed by a local business, organization, or school. You can even vote for your favorite!
Christmastime brings the annual "Let it Stroll" event that transforms the gardens into a dazzling sea of lights, floral displays, Christmas trees, and more. Hot chocolate and cookies are available for purchase.
Visit the Shangri La Botanical Gardens website or the Shangri La Botanical Gardens Facebook page for more information. And make sure to check out Backcountry if you need a new pair of walking shoes to make your garden stroll more comfortable.
