The Jungle-Like Area Of Texas That You Have To Experience For Yourself
Considering our state is nearly 900 miles across, an incredible amount of ecological diversity is to be expected. That being said, most people don’t know we have a park that resembles a lush, tropical jungle. Palmetto State Park in Gonzales lets you escape into paradise without leaving Texas.
Just an hour away from Austin and San Antonio lies a lush tropical oasis. Multiple water sources make the park a haven for all sorts of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, armadillos, squirrels, raccoons, and more than 240 bird species.
Dwarf palmettos, the park's namesake, are impossible to miss. They only grow in East and Southeast Texas, so getting to see just how many command every inch of these wetlands is a unique, unforgettable opportunity.
Nearly five miles of hiking trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate. Each path features different flora and fauna, so experience the park's incredible diversity by taking them all. Along the way, you'll encounter several historic structures built nearly a century ago by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The picnic pavilion can be rented for private events!
Water recreation activities include fishing, swimming, tubing, and canoeing. There's also a paddling trail, oxbow lake, artesian well, and swamps. Remember, no fishing license is required at state parks!
19 tent sites and 18 RV platforms allow for overnight camping. A group site accommodates 99 people, while an air-conditioned cabin sleeps six. Extend your stay beyond a quick day trip to really get immersed in this one-of-a-kind natural area.
