When you live in Austin, life clips at an exciting pace. The sounds of yelping grackles and wailing guitars greet you wherever you go, and you can't help but get caught up in the city's unwavering energy. If you've lived here for a while, you'll notice a new pattern start to emerge. Suddenly, you're speaking with a slight southern twang and you're singing along to the radio. You've picked up these 10 undeniable habits that no Austinite can ever unlearn.
1. Saying "Y'all."
It's just so much easier to combine the words "you" and "all" than to say them both together.
2. Putting on our cowboy boots before leaving the house.
Most Austinites have a pair of cowboy boots by the time they are five years old. When you live Texas' capital city, your pride runs deep.
3. Finding creative ways to avoid traffic
Mid-evening floats along Lady Bird Lake are preferable to sitting at a standstill for over an hour.
4. Riding our bikes everywhere.
Austin is both health-conscious and eco-friendly, so it makes sense that we prefer to pedal our way around. Besides, with Austin's congested traffic, it's sometimes faster to hop on your bike and ride.
5. Hearing live music every night.
You can't go two feet in downtown Austin without hearing another blues riff or bass line, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
6. Fending off grackles.
Love them or hate them, one thing is certain: grackles are feisty little birds. They'll swoop in for your taco, they'll nibble at your brisket, and they'll even try to commandeer your bottle of Topo Chico. You've got to watch your back around these flying scavengers.
7. Guzzling Topo Chico.
Austinites have an unwavering adoration for this sparkling water. You don't want to be around someone who just gulped their last one.
8. Bringing our dog everywhere.
It'd be a shame to leave our furry friend at home when so many local businesses welcome them with open arms! Austinites treat their pets like children, and often dress them up and push them in strollers.
9. Staying on our side of the river.
Excitement bursts throughout the city, but Austinites rarely cross the river to reach it. Oddly enough, this city remains greatly separated. Locals tend to stick to their neighborhood instead of driving ten miles to an event or concert.
10. Celebrating anything and everything.
Of course, we throw a party for a fictional Winnie the Pooh character! And why wouldn't we stand along the South Congress Bridge and cheer on the bats taking flight? Life is an occasion, and Austinites never miss a chance to celebrate.
