We tend to spend a lot of time talking about the east side of Tennessee and Music City stuck hard in the middle, without a thought to Jackson or Memphis. We're not particular, especially when it comes to the expansive beauty laid out across the Volunteer State, but we have to say - west Tennessee OWNS in the milkshake department.
We decided to take a summer day trip through Memphis, and fell in love with these fabulous little milkshake spots. Some are better known, others tend to fall into the "diamond in the rough" category, but each of them bring their A-game when it comes to a thick and creamy dessert.

Alright folks - here's our itinerary. We're bouncing all around the great city of Memphis today, with stops at five of the city's most iconic and delicious milkshake hot spots.
1. Arcade Restaurant - 540 S Main Street
The Arcade Restaurant in Memphis is proud to be one of the oldest operating eateries in the city, and the neon signs and '50s-inspired menu puts all doubt to rest. You can enjoy breakfast all day OR take our word for it and ask your waiter or waitress what's best when it comes to their milkshake menu. The entire vibe and atmosphere elevates your dessert experience, so the Arcade Restaurant is a must-visit!
2. Trolley Stop Market - 704 Madison Avenue
This cute, quirky Memphis hotspot boasts a rustic atmosphere and local wares sold throughout the space. You'll feel like you've stepped right onto a sweet-smelling and upscale farm once you walk through the door, and the authentic Memphis experience will leave your belly full and your sweet tooth sated. The creative menu has something for every palate - burgers and vegan fare alike - but we'd recommend just a classic chocolate shake and a burger. Keep it straight and simple for the best experience at this west Tennessee eatery.
3. Sweet Noshings - 2113 Madison Avenue
The strawberry ice cream here is our favorite, but you can wander the aisles of this magical Memphis sweet shop with dessert in hand to find...well, more dessert. This is a candy wonderland that takes you back in time to your Willy Wonka childhood dreams.
4. 'Sweden Kream - 1472 National Street
'Sweden Kream may not look like much, but this low-key Memphis spot has been around for years and is well-known amongst locals for their ice cream treats. Their social media may still be a bit underground, but take it from us - this is one Memphis establishment whose reputation speaks volumes. We'd recommend a simple vanilla shake with a side of fries for a nostalgic step back in time.
5. Miccos Snocones & Shakes - 2015 S Houston Levee Road
Well, first let's just LOOK at that amazing milkshake. We're already in! If that's not enough to convince you to shell out a few dollars, the New Orleans-style sno cones and thick, whipped cream-clad shakes should do the trick. Located in Collierville, Miccos is a local legend amongst both the young and old, made even more popular by their cheap prices and unique menu options like ice cream nachos.
If you'd rather indulge in dessert of the PIE variety, this historic restaurant serves up some of the best pies in the state. They're delicious!
