11 Unwritten Rules Every Nashvillian Lives By Until Death
There’s something about making your home in a city that makes you fall in line, link arms and make of a few rules of the road. If you’re going to get along here, there are a couple of things you best know…things you should do, things you should avoid, and how to become a solid Nashvillian. Although many of us aren’t lucky enough to have been born here – we can still make it home.
11. Cowboy boots downtown are for tourists.
The real country folk are out in the fields, tilling their land.
10. Don't use your turn signal.
This is probably the worst rule ever…? But everyone seems to love it so here it is.
9. Starbucks is simply NOT for locals.
Unless you're in a rush. Then it's for businessfolks and tourists alike. We like our coffee at home or from one of our local coffeeshops, please.
8. Don't pay for shows if you don't have to.
Chances are, you know a friend of a friend and you're either paying for a show because there's no way around it or you're looking to support a colleague. Good for you!
7. You know all the best venues.
If they're dark and underground and only known by locals, it's going to be a great show. And house shows! Yes. Those are the dream.
6. Chicken comes hot with a side of bread.
That's just how we do it 'round these parts. It helps soak up the heat, after all.
5. Take pride in your state, take pride in your country.
No, our country isn't perfect. There is a lot of heartbreak and sadness, but here in Tennessee we seek to find the good in our homeland.
4. Smile at everyone, even if you don't know them.
Actually - ESPECIALLY if you don't know them. Nashville is known as one of the friendliest cities in the United States for a reason.
3. Stay off the roads if it snows.
If there's even a bit of a dusting, Nashvillians stay off the roads - or try to, at least. We just don't get snow enough to drive in it well...? So we keep our families and communities safe and at home during the icy chill.
2. Keep that iced tea sweet!
You'll have to ask special for unsweetened iced tea in Nashville, and you may get a few weird looks.
1. May you always remember the one true king.
Of whiskey, that is. Whiskey. Uh...see #5. This is awkward...
Have you tried out this gorgeous canopy tour in Tennessee..? It’s beautiful!
