There are certain meals that drag you right back to a moment in time, a memory that holds you captive and runs your nostalgia reel raw as different spices and textures give you a strong dose of, "remember when". Here in Nashville, that could be anything from your grandma's biscuits to a hot chicken sandwich fresh from Prince's. Today, we decided to get a little nostalgic for a meal that rarely graced the dinner table, but existed across the pond - or really, down under.
British fish and chips are an icon - whether the European dish is served on the television screen or in your favorite pub, it's the kind of food that makes you smile through the grease and pat your belly after hammering it on home. But what about an AUSTRALIAN dish of fish and chips...?
Red Perch recently just opened in Nashville's downtown Arcade, a collection of small shops, art galleries and eateries on the northern side of downtown.
The family-owned space is founded on great eats and good values, offering up items like beer-battered fish and chips as well as catfish, calamari and shrimp banh mi.
Is your jaw on the ground yet, Nashville? It's hard to get a landlocked state on board with a seafood restaurant at first, but Red Perch has found itself selling out of its delicious fare on the daily.
With only twenty seats available in the restaurant you might want to plan ahead, but trust us: the wait is worth it. There's a reason why this tiny spot is packed to the gills daily, and it's not just the spectacular hospitality.
Owners Cameron and Nichole Payne met in Hawaii before making their home in Nashville. Cameron grew up in Australia, and after honing his culinary chops down under he spent a time in Turkey and learning the art of a good meal around the world before heading to the American south.
There's a whole lot of heart and thought that goes into a meal at Red Perch. Are you game to try this fabulous new spot out? Have you ever tried Australian fish & chips...? You can visit Monday through Friday from 10:30am to 3pm, in the downtown Nashville Arcade.
You can continue to enjoy the quirky fun of our great city with a visit to this board game cafe - are you up for it?
