The family-owned and operated Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery has been regaling the locals with the incredible product since the mid-nineteenth century. Although Tennessee tends to lose its profound whiskey knowledge in the production of Jack Daniel’s over in Lynchburg, this incredible space is located right outside of downtown Nashville, easy to get to, easy to tour. Green Brier Distillery has quite the historic heritage, having first been founded with a patent purchase by Charles Nelson in 1860. Although the state exploded with distilleries and whiskey-producing wealth seekers, it was Nelson's Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey that proved it had staying power.
Green Brier was actually one of the first distilleries that sold whiskey by the bottle as opposed to by the barrel or jug, and this helped with its distribution significantly, making it a house name across the world.

The distillery became known fondly as, "Old Number Five" since it was the fifth registered distillery in the state as well as a member of the fifth tax district. After Charles' death, it was his wife Louisa who took over the business and made Green Brier the first female-run distillery in Tennessee.

Green Brier has managed to overcome the ravages of time and prohibition to become one of Tennessee's preeminent distilleries. It's still in the family, now run by Andy and Charlie Nelson, two brothers who hail as the great-great-great grandchildren of Charles Nelson. It's a true Tennessee tradition!
