This New Mexico Airbnb Is Like Stepping Onto the Set of a Star Wars Movie

Make your Star Wars dreams come alive at this modern, off-the-grid house in Taos, New Mexico. Even Luke Skywalker would want to visit this Earthship Airbnb.

In a galaxy not too far away in the … New Mexico desert, there’s an otherworldly vacation rental that could easily be the childhood home of Luke Skywalker. Is the force with you, and are you a true Star Wars fan? Then you’ll know that Skywalker lived on Tatooine, a fictional planet featuring a vast desert landscape with adobe-style dwellings. If you’ve ever dreamt of living out your fantasies as your favorite lightsaber-wielding character, consider a stay at Taos Mesa Studio Earthship. Even a past guest mentioned that “Earthship is like something out of a Star Wars movie.” Hiding out in the high desert mesa, this Star Wars-themed Airbnb in New Mexico might be one of the coolest places to stay. Come see for yourself!

Just 20 minutes on the outskirts of Taos is a community of Earthship homes built with recycled materials. The off-the-grid homes are fully sustainable, catching rainwater and using solar panels for electricity. In my head, this is the kind of place where Luke Skywalker and his friends would visit. I could totally see him spending his days inside this studio Earthship. Also, this would be the perfect destination to film more Star Wars movies, and I bet George Lucas (if he weren’t retired from the franchise) would think so too.

It took the owner and host, Dan, three years to build the one-bedroom rental. In his words, he states, "It was one of the hardest things I have done, but so worth it." The exterior of the home has muted colors that blend with the alien-like desert landscape. I especially love the colorful recycled glass bottles around the front door that glow when the lights are on at night.

The house might be off-the-grid, but it has all the modern conveniences you will need for a comfortable stay. Amenities include a full bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a washer and dryer. The rental remains a cool 72 degrees year-round for those wondering about heating and cooling, without a conventional air conditioner or heater. The best part? Blackout blinds so you can enjoy longer mornings in bed. When you finally decide to raise the shades, you’ll be greeted with views of the breathtaking snow-capped Rockies in the distance and the desert terrain.

The house is cozy, and the furnishings are simple yet inviting. Inside the spacious studio, expect a comfy queen-size bed and a sofa bed, which is enough room for four to sleep. But if you ask me, I think Earthship is the right size for a couple or even a solo traveler. One of the studio's highlights is the greenhouse with lots of natural lighting to help the plants and herbs grow. If you’re big on sustainability, you will fully enjoy this space. Did I mention that this rental is pet-friendly? For a small one-time fee, feel free to bring your furry pal along.

While you’re here, check out the hiking trails at Taos Ski Valley, and if you visit during the winter months, I’d recommend you hit the slopes there. For more movie magic, walk across the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, the site where scenes from several movies like "Natural Born Killers" and "Terminator Salvation" were filmed. The 650-foot structure is the fifth-highest bridge in the country, so you don’t want to miss seeing it. Of course, there is plenty to do in Taos, so be sure to check it out too. Fun Fact: Taos is one of New Mexico’s most haunted small towns. Honestly, that is a reason to visit.

Once you’re done with the scenic spots in the area, retreat to your Earthship. Snuggle by the fire pit, roast marshmallows, and watch the gorgeous sunset over the desert skies. Don’t forget to bring firewood with you as it is not supplied. When you’re ready to live your Star Wars dream, visit the Airbnb listing for the Taos Mesa Studio Earthship. You won’t regret your stay here.
