Maine is full of history. Much of it comes in the form of museums and landmarks found throughout the state. But in a state as old as this one, it's not surprising that a lot of our history can be found in every day spots as well. Coffee shops are housed in buildings built in the 1800s, bridges have been helping people cross rivers since before the state was a state and hotels have been welcoming guests since before Maine was a real vacation destination. This one, recently named as the most famous in the state by Elle Decor, is a great example!
The Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport has been an important part of Maine's tourism history since the early 1900s. While it didn't always have the same name, it has always offered a place of rest and relaxation the same way it does today.
The Colony Hotel was originally the site of the Ocean Bluff Hotel in 1872. It then became the Breakwater Court in 1914. About 20 years later in 1935, the Boughton family purchased The Colony Hotel in Delray Beach, Florida. Just a few years after that, in 1947, they purchased the Breakwater Court. Officially becoming The Colony Hotel in 1948, the Maine hotel became the sister property of the one in Florida. The Maine location is open in the summer and the Florida one is open in the winter.
Today, Maine's Colony Hotel has expanded to include 125 rooms and 5 different buildings.
The location is quintessential Maine, with rocky coast and lots of landscaped beauty.
The hotel is constantly being spruced-up and the off-season is never really "off." When they open for the summer, it's clear that a lot of work has been done.
The pool area is a major attraction and feels contemporary and bright.
There are two restaurants and you'll definitely never go hungry here!
Be sure to take advantage of the breakfast buffet and the Friday Night Mariners Buffet!
And, as Maine's first green hotel, they're dedicated to reducing their footprint. That means a focus on reducing solid waste, material reuse, recycling, and conservation of water.
It's no wonder this property was named to Elle Decor's list of the most iconic and famous hotels in every state!
The Colony Hotel is a beautiful place for a weekend stay. You can learn more about it by visiting their website and you can book a room here. Check them out on Facebook for updates on fun entertainment and other events. If you have questions you can reach them on 207-967-3331.
