If you're the type of person who loves a good ghost story, then spending the night in Hotel Dunsmuir one of Northern California's many haunted hotels is a must. We've got a lot of them! Featured here is a lesser-known hotel in the gorgeous little town of Dunsmuir. Initially constructed in the 1800s, this old hotel is filled with ghost stories of wandering, restless souls. These creepy legends are enough to send chills down your spine, but there's just one way to find out if there's any truth to them. Would you spend the night in this historic haunted hotel in California? Is the Hotel Dunsmuir haunted?

Hiding in the lovely mountain town, this haunted Dunsmuir hotel was initially erected in the 1800s.

Back then, it was known as the Mt. Shasta Hotel.

The date of this scanned postcard is unknown, but it gives an idea of how the town might have looked.

The haunted hotel in California burned to the ground during a fire in 1903 that took most of the town with it and was rebuilt in 1904 by Abner Weed and called the Weed Hotel shown in this photo from the 1950s.

Today, it's simply known as the Dunsmuir Hotel and you can see the magnificent Mount Shasta in the distance.

With such a long history and numerous reincarnations, it only makes sense that the Dunsmuir Hotel has its fair share of ghost stories.

It's said that the hotel is home to many infamous spirits, many of which have become vibrant characters of haunted California's storied past.

There's one child spirit they call Charlie or "The Kid," believed to have fallen to his death from the stairwell.

Another spirit, James, is rumored to have hung himself in the Hotel Dunsmuir stairwell for all of the guests to see.

One of the most disturbing spirits is called "The Lonesome Wanderer."

This sad soul is believed to have been a guest who killed himself in room 307, now known as "The Suicide Room." It is so haunted that the hotel no longer rents it out. Lodgers are advised to steer clear of this paranormal hot spot. This photo is not room 307, it is the Mark Twain Room.

And yet another restless spirit you may meet here is a man who dressed up as a maid.

There's no telling if you'll meet any of these spirits during your stay; however, plenty of occurrences at Hotel Dunsmuir make it clear that there's something strange going on.

Expect drawers to open and close by themselves, lights to flicker on and off, and furniture to reposition at random times.

In fact, the hotel is so adamant about its haunted status that it encourages anybody with concerns about paranormal experiences to stay away.
