There's nothing quite like walking into a comfy hotel room after a day spent traveling and sight-seeing. But why choose a chain when you can stay in a hotel with a rich history and an equally fascinating decor? Let's take a look at one hotel that does all of this and more!
Located in the heart of downtown Tucson, just steps away from the old Rialto Theatre and the rail lines, sits the historic Hotel Congress.
Built in 1919, the hotel was part of the modernization of Tucson. In the months and years before construction began, the railroads were built, roads were paved, and streetcars installed.
That must have been quite the era to be alive, watching a centuries old town welcome electricity and automobiles.
While the hotel has kept up with modern conveniences over the decades (plumbing, electricity, air conditioning, and wi-fi), it is known in part today for its devotion to historical roots. Let's take a look inside!
The lobby, shown above, is decorated in a stunning art deco fixtures combined with antiques and the geometric patterns of Southwestern designs.
This scheme continues through the hotel, a beautiful blend of designs and eras.
Stepping into the rooms is another experience and one of the most parts of staying in this hotel! Each room is kept minimal and will probably remind you of an early-20th century motel room.
Iron bed frames, large sweater-like blankets, and a simple vanity table are present in each room. But so are these...
When's the last time you saw a telephone and radio like these sitting in a hotel room?
It's little touches like these that create a unique atmosphere and help you feel like you've been transported back in time.
Why the vintage ambiance? Well, first, why not? And, second, the hotel is known for being the location of the capture of a well-known 1930s bank robber: John Dillinger.
The 1930s decor captures the mood of the era and the annual Dillinger Days each January re-enacts Dillinger's arrest.
The hotel is also home to the award-winning Cup Cafe, a restaurant that serves tasty meals throughout the day.
For example, you could enjoy this tasty meal for dinner!
You'll also find bars and a club for music and dancing.
So, how does resting your weary head in this bed sound?
The Hotel Congress is located at 311 East Congress Street in Tucson. You can find details about their restaurants, special events, and making reservations on their website or Facebook page.
