One Of The Best Campgrounds In Alabama Is Open For Adventure Year-Round

We've said before that Chewacla State Park is underrated, so you may not be surprised to find you'll find some of the best year-round camping in Alabama there, as well. The park comprises almost 700 acres near Auburn with land that shines in every season. You'll find amenities for just about every style of camping imaginable, from primitive sites to glamping tents. If you're like me, you think the full range is great, so the ultimate choice depends on the occasion. All you have to do is take your pick of season and site at Chewacla.

The 2.5-mile Chewacla State Park Trail leads you to Chewacla Falls, a man-made waterfall a favorite feature among park visitors. Although the weather isn't always nice enough to hop in the water, it's a pretty sight even then.

The park is also huge among mountain bikers of all levels for its excellent trails. For example, one section of Dell's Trail includes the Great Wall of Chewacla, a 15-foot wooden wall that puts the most highly skilled riders to the test.

Hikers, trail runners, and walkers also can take to any of the park's many multi-use trails.

The park's much larger water feature is its 26-acre lake, which has a swimming area and high dive people especially love in the steamy summer months.

Meanwhile, you can enjoy beautiful views of the like from land any time – and any time of day if you plan a stay.

A new addition to the park are luxury glamping tents, which the state parks system began adding to several parks in 2023 in partnership with The Timberline Glamping Company. You can choose between single or double safari tents, depending on the size of your crew.

And on that note, camping options include 36 campsites for recreational vehicles up to 60 feet in length. There are two loops of these sites, and each has its own temperature controlled bathhouse. All of the sites have water, sewage, electricity, and satellite TV.

For tent campers, there are nine primitive sites situated between the two RV loops. Each site has a fire ring and is big enough for a tent, vehicle, and up to four adults max. Groups of 20 or more who want to tent camp, like Scouts or other groups, can reserve a big group camp space. A cool historical fact is that the site was where the Civilian Conservation Corps workers stayed in the 1930s while they built the park.

Looking back to that era brings us to the park's cabin camping options, which date back to that era. CCC workers built five of the park's six cabins, which received full renovations in 2003. The small cabins can accommodate up to four people and the larger ones up to six.
