Wausau is an up-and-coming city of around 40,000 that sits on the edge of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in north-central Wisconsin. What we like about this city is that it's big enough to offer plenty of amenities to its residents and visitors, but it's small enough to feel like a welcoming community. Plus, it sits at the doorstep of some of the most beautiful places in the Badger State.
Located in a prime spot on the Wisconsin River, Wausau is the seat of Marathon County and a city that was built on lumber. Now more diversified, the town boasts a strong economy and low unemployment rates. Wausau has enjoyed steady population growth over the years, but it's leveled off a bit since a .5 percent spike between 2019 and 2020.
In addition to its location and commerce, Wausau punches above its weight in culture, as well. You'll find plenty of wonderful parks in the city, like 400 Block, which draws folks for community events and concerts, and the gorgeous Isle of Ferns. For a city of its size, Wausau boasts a surprising number of museums - including two art museums and a children's museum - as well as a bevy of excellent eateries. The Mint Cafe, for example, offers a charming retro dining experience.
Wausau is also home to beautiful Rib Mountain, as well as its namesake state park. At more than a billion years old, Rib Mountain is one of the oldest geologic formations on the planet. Today, though, this unique natural wonder is destination for recreation. The state park is day use only, and it's a popular spot for picnicking and hiking. Check out AllTrails Plus to learn more about the park's 13 miles of trails, which are open year-round. In winter, two miles of trail are groomed for snowshoeing. Rib Mountain is also home to Granite Peak Ski and Snowboard Area, which boasts 68 trails over 405 acres. In the autumn, you can ride a ski lift over the mountain's gorgeous foliage and enjoy a prime seat for peak colors.
As far as Wisconsin cities go, we figure Wausau is just about right. If you're unfamiliar with the city or haven't been in a while, it's a truly wonderful destination for a weekend getaway. You'll find plenty of awesome vacation rentals to choose from in and around town. One that I particularly like is a charming, three-bedroom, waterfront cottage located right on the Wisconsin River. It's close to everything Wausau has to offer, and even with all its charm and location, it's surprisingly affordable.
