1. America’s First Brewpub After Prohibition – Where Craft Beer History Began

Yakima Brewing & Malting Co., also known as Grant's Brewery Pub, opened in 1982 and was the first in the country after Prohibition ended. Bert Grant’s establishment made Washington one of the nation’s top craft beer producers. KOMO TV was the first station in history to broadcast daily local news in digital high definition television (HDTV) in May 1999 to the Seattle area. The HDTV was revolutionary at that time, and being the first in Washington, it paved the way for nationwide adoption.

3. Washington Leads the Way With the First Floating Bridge

The Lacey V. Murrow Bridge carries the eastbound lanes of I-90 across Lake Washington and is the first floating concrete bridge in the world. It was built in 1940, which was a major milestone in engineering. Since then, Washington has built multiple floating bridges, including the marvelous Evergreen Point Floating Bridge (SR 520 Bridge) on Lake Washington.

4. Seattle Pioneers Change With Bertha Landes, First Female Mayor of a Major American City

She served as mayor from 1926 to 1928 and pushed for civil service hiring, the city’s first traffic code, and tighter regulation of nightlife. She was a strong advocate for women in politics, and her impact continues to shape and inspire women leaders today.

5. Home of the Very First Red Robin Restaurant

The first location of many opened here in our state and has served up some appetizing burgers since its founding in 1969. It was established near the University of Washington, and due to its popularity among students, the chain rapidly expanded nationwide.

6. From Here Came the First-Ever Cinnabon, Now a Global Favorite

In 1985, the first location opened at the SeaTac Mall, and the only option on the menu was the "Cinnabon Classic" cinnamon roll. The bakery has grown into a global brand, and today, SeaTac International Mall visitors can still experience its roots.

7. The Northgate Mall: Seattle Made Retail History With the First Shopping Mall in America

While you're shopping here, a trip to Red Robin for a burger is never a bad idea. It opened its doors in 1950, and it was significant as one of the earliest suburban shopping centers. Later on, it influenced mall culture across the U.S.

8. Breaking Ground in Voting Rights – Washington Allowed the First E-Mail Ballots for Troops and Expats
