Washingtonians have strong opinions about their state, from local culture to sports and music.
There are just some undisputable facts every Washingtonian knows and will vehemently defend. Are you Team Dog or Team Cat? Do you know the best band to come out of Washington, or that pants are optional in the Pacific Northwest? Read on for 10 fun facts and strong beliefs about life in Washington State that locals passionately stand by.
1. We Always Say We Are From Washington State

Admit it! When you tell someone you’re from Washington, the response is usually, "D.C.?". That’s why we always say we’re from Washington, the state. We’ve said it so many times it might as well be printed on our driver’s licenses.
2. Not Everyone from Washington Lives in Seattle – We Promise!

We might reside in the small town of Walla Walla or Puyallup, but no one outside of Washington has ever heard of those places, so we say we’re from Seattle. It’s easier that way. Of course, we know there’s much more to Washington than Seattle – but sometimes it’s just easier for outsiders to understand.
3. If You’re Using an Umbrella, You’re Definitely Not from Washington

Sure, it rains a lot in Western Washington; more than 150 days a year, to be precise. But that doesn’t stop us from getting outside and enjoying the great outdoors. We can’t let umbrellas slow us down – real Washingtonians simply don’t use them.
4. Dogs Are Better Than Cats

Every Washingtonian knows that dogs are superior companions. Have you ever seen a cat frolicking in Puget Sound or happily running through the Olympic Rainforest? We didn’t think so. Dogs are the ultimate adventure buddies–always ready for a stroll through Pike Place Market, a hike up Mount Rainier, or a splash in Lake Washington, no matter the weather. Their boundless enthusiasm perfectly matches the state’s wild, outdoorsy spirit.
5. Bigfoot Is Real – Just Ask Anyone from Washington

Bigfoot sightings have been reported in Washington more than in any other place on Earth. There can be only one explanation. Bigfoot is real. According to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, Washington ranks first in the U.S. for reported sightings. So there’s definitely something out there.
6. UFOs Are Real Too – Washington Folks Know What They’ve Seen

And while we’re at it, UFOs are real, too. A recent study by the National UFO Reporting Center (based in Davenport, Washington) showed that Washington has had more UFO sightings per capita than any other state.
7. Nirvana Reigns Supreme as the Greatest Band from Washington State

Without a doubt, Washington has produced countless musical legends. What about Jimi Hendrix, you might ask? Mr. Hendrix was a solo artist. Nirvana was a band, the best band – end of discussion. And don't forget Pearl Jam – a rock band that holds a special place in our hearts.
8. When It’s 50 Degrees in Washington, It’s Shorts Weather

Pants are overrated in Washington. We like hiking, biking, and drinking coffee. We can’t be troubled with cumbersome pants. Since we mentioned hiking and biking (and drinking coffee), one of our favorite places to do so is on the Dog Mountain Trail in the Columbia River Gorge. The Dog Mountain Trail offers stunning wildflower views each spring; however, please note that a timed permit is required from April to June. The trail is steep but provides rest areas and scenic overlooks along the way.
9. One Day, the Mariners Will Finally Make It to the World Series

As of 2025, the Mariners are the only active Major League Baseball franchise that has never reached the World Series. But we have faith in our sports teams – one day, the Mariners will make it to the World Series.
10. Seahawks Fans Are the Loudest and Best in the Entire NFL

And speaking of sports, Seahawks fans are the best fans in the NFL. You could argue this point, but you would be wrong. Well, we’ll just smile and let the 12th Man’s roar speak for itself. Check out this article about road trip ideas in Washington.
