11 Things Every South Dakotan Wants The Rest Of The World To Know

If you’ve never visited South Dakota, then you’ve been missing out on a fantastic place to tour or even put down roots. But, sometimes it feels like South Dakota is the state that people know the least amount about. We’ve got a few things that we would like the rest of the country to know about our lovely state. Here are 11 things about Mount Rushmore State that just might surprise you.

1. You are not pronouncing our state capital correctly.

How about you drop the French accent and then try again?

2. Our state has SO many delicious restaurants to choose from.

Some of the best eateries in South Dakota are found in itty-bitty towns. Mom and pop homemade comfort food anyone?

3. It's better to have a truck than a Lamborghini.

Especially if you hope to be able to drive through the snow.

4. We have more shoreline than Florida.

Yes, you read that correctly. Between our many lakes and tributaries of the Missouri River, we offer more miles of shoreline than The Sunshine State.

5. We are completely civilized.

And yes, we have running water….

6. We’re a state filled with plenty of culture and arts to be experienced.

It’s not hard to find annual events that celebrate our state’s heritage, such as Deadwood’s Days of ’76, Tabor’s Czech Days, or Freeman’s Schmeckfest. There are also numerous art and crafts festivals and performing art programs to experience!

7. Not everyone in our state’s favorite hobby is hunting, fishing, or attending a rodeo.

Sure, many South Dakotans love this type of outdoor adventure, but for some reason outsiders tend to forget that we’re not all the same. We are a diverse bunch with various hobbies and interests. Duh!

8. We have a fantastic craft beer scene!

From Crow Peak Brewing in Spearfish to Sioux Fall’s Fernson Brewing Company, it’s not hard to find quality beer in Mount Rushmore State. We are home to more than a dozen thriving breweries.

9. Four of our cities were named on the list of the top 100 places to live in the country.

According to Livibility.com,

Sioux Falls, Brookings, Aberdeen, Rapid City, and Watertown are some of the most ideal places in our nation to call home!

10. Our state is not boring, unless, of course, you’re boring.

Let’s get that straight. With so many opportunities for entertainment, exploration, and adventure, South Dakota is a wonderful place to live with plenty to offer.

11. The South Dakota countryside doesn’t actually look like this.

The pictures you see don’t do our state justice; it’s even more beautiful and peaceful in person.
