Statistically, crime in Rhode Island falls far below the national average. But while Rhody boasts the ninth-lowest violent crime rate in the country, it also has the second-highest violent crime rate in New England. That being said, it's definitely not dangerous to call the Ocean State home. Life in Rhode Island is amazing and filled with wonder, and no matter if you're a native or if you're a transplant, you're sure to find something to love here. Recently, Safewise collected data and statistics from all over the state and found the 10 safest cities to call home. If you live in one of these places, we hope this helps you breathe a little easier.

1. Bristol

The statistics say that Bristol is the safest city in Rhode Island. The property crime rate here is 3.2 per 1,000 residents, and the violent crime rate is a mere 0.2, which is an improvement from last year's 0.7.

2. South Kingstown

South Kingstown is a town full of historic villages located in Washington County. While the property crime rate is 4.5 per 1,000 residents, the low violent crime rate of 0.5 is impressive.

3. Cumberland

Cumberland has a lengthy history - it was first settled in 1635 and incorporated in 1746. And with a violent crime rate of just 0.8 incidents per 1,000 residents, it's safe to say it has a bright future as well. Cumberland is home to an interesting attraction: the most haunted road in Rhode Island.

4. Smithfield

The town of Smithfield has some interesting statistics. It has a property crime rate of 6.5 per 1,000 residents, which is fairly high for a town of 21,893 people. However, its violent crime rate is practically non-existent at just one incident per 1,000 residents, so it comes in fourth on the list.

5. Coventry

About 34,740 people call Coventry home, although it certainly seems like a quiet little town. While the property crime rate of 7.3 per 1,000 residents is higher than most of the other cities on this list, the low violent crime rate of 1.2 per 1,000 residents secured its spot on this list.

6. North Providence

The property crime rate in North Providence is 5.9 per 1,000 residents, which isn't bad for a town of 32,652. The violent crime rate of 1.6 is also pretty promising.

7. North Kingstown

North Kingstown is part of the Providence metropolitan area, but it has a much slower pace than the big city. And with a violent crime rate of just 1.0 per 1,000 people, it's a very safe place to call home.

8. Warwick

In Johnston, the violent crime and property crime rates are just 0.8 and 12.3 incidents per 1,000 residents. Statistically speaking, that's pretty darn safe. Johnston is home to one of the best scenic drives in Rhode Island.

9. Cranston

While Cranston lies in Providence county, it's definitely its own separate city. And with a violent crime rate of just 1.4 per 1,000 people, it earned a spot on the list for 2023.

10. Westerly

Charming and delightful, Westerly is a quiet place where life is beautiful and simple, and that's just how the locals like it. Both its violent crime (0.8 per 1,000 residents) and property crime (13.1 per 1,000 residents) rates are especially low, so you can count on small town living at its finest here.
