9 Things You Quickly Learn When You Move To Cleveland

Living in Cleveland can be a big adjustment. We're not like most cities in the U.S. in a lot of ways, but every little quirk just makes the Forest City and its people more special. It might take some getting used to, but you'll be able to pick up on these nine things fairly quickly once you move in.

1. We go crazy for the home teams.

Cleveland is somewhat defined by our undying loyalty for our sports teams. Win, lose, or draw, the outpouring of support for the Indians, Cavs, Browns and Vikings is truly inspiring, and you owe it to yourself to fill the stands at the Jake or the Dawg Pound as soon as possible.

2. It's called the Forest City for a reason.

You might be surprised to see just how much green there is around Cleveland. Our love of all things nature means that our parks and forests are kept in perfect condition year-round. The Emerald Necklace is a defining part of Cleveland, and any outdoorsy person will find something to love about our parks.

3. Our traditions are a little unusual.

Cleveland's unique sense of city pride leads to a variety of odd citywide customs. Every Clevelander remembers their first Dyngus Day parade, and that means we take celebrations like St. Patrick's Day very seriously.

4. You will rarely be able to predict the weather.

Cleveland truly lives at both extremes of the climate spectrum. It gets blisteringly hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, with no shortage of variation in between. It's not unusual to bust out both your flip-flops and your winter boots in the span of a week.

5. The winters are no joke.

Ah, the Lake Effect. Though Lake Erie might be the city's lifeblood, for a few months every year it becomes the source of all our winter woes. Expect heavy snow, high winds, and brutal temperatures to strike every so often, but a true Clevelander doesn't let a little storm stop them.

6. We move fast, so try to keep up.

Cleveland is one of the biggest, most bustling cities in the Midwest. While we certainly have an appreciation for the little things, the fast-paced nature of life downtown or the frenetic energy of Cleveland after dark go to show that Cleveland never sleeps.

7. Getting around town is a very different experience.

The Rapid is nothing like any big city subway you've ever ridden. While it might not be the fastest public transportation system in the world, traversing Cleveland is a fun and easy task most days.

8. You'll just have to trust us on the food.

Cleveland is a foodie's favorite city. From our vibrant Little Italy eateries to the gloriously messy bliss that is a hot, fresh Polish Boy, the dining in Cleveland is simply top notch. Just don't forget the napkins.

9. You're part of the family.

Above all, the one thing that you find out right away about Cleveland and its people is that you will be welcomed into the Forest City community with open arms. You'll never find a city more united in our shared compassion and kindness for one another, and you'll fit right in no matter who you are.
