10 Stereotypes About Nebraska That Need To Be Put To Rest – Right Now

Nebraska is often misunderstood and stereotyped, but it offers a rich culture, modern amenities, and diverse attractions.

The rest of the world seems to have a lot of weird opinions about Nebraska. Friends on the coasts and in other countries have actually asked me if we still have "cowboys and Indians" here. So for everyone who has ever made assumptions about our fine state, here are some Nebraska stereotypes that really need to die.

1) It's All Cornfields

This seems to be the most common Nebraska stereotype. Sure, we're an agricultural state, but we've got plenty of other industries that make the economy run.

2) Everyone Lives on a Farm

Even in the small towns, plenty of us live in non-farming households.

3) We All Drive Tractors to Work

To be fair, a lot of rural schools have a "drive your tractor to work day" once a year...but most of us just use cars or trucks to get around.

4) There's Nothing to Do

With music festivals, a world-class zoo, stunning natural attractions, outdoor festivities all summer long, and cultural festivals all year, you'll only be bored in Nebraska if you want to be.

5) There's No Culture Here

Nebraska has literally hundreds of museums to explore. Our communities have rich cultural histories - and where else in the country can you walk in the footsteps of so many American pioneers?

6) Our Idea of Fun is Cow Tipping

This isn't really a thing, people. It's an urban legend, and kind of a dumb one at that.

7) We Only Eat at Buffets

Yeah, we like buffets as much as people in any other state...but we equally enjoy going to a nice restaurant and having our food brought right to our tables by other people.

8) We All Listen to Nothing But Country Music

Country music is massively popular here...but so is rock, blues, jazz, indie, punk, hip-hop, and every other type of music you can think of. We're multi-dimensional, okay?

9) We Don't Have Electricity or Running Water

A lot of Nebraskans were born into a world without plumbing and electricity, but to assume we still don't have those modern amenities in the 21st century is just silly.

10) Nebraska is Still the Wild, Wild West

Was Nebraska once full of cattle rustlers, rough-and-tumble lawmen, pioneers and gold miners on their way to find their fortunes? Absolutely! And that's what makes our history so fascinating. But come on, world - we're just as modernized as the rest of America.

So tell me, Nebraska: which annoying stereotypes did I miss?
