A Little-Known Slice Of Michigan History Can Be Found At This 1908 Home

Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the most well-known architects in America and he designed some of the most iconic buildings in the country. When he passed away in 1959, he had designed well over 1,000 buildings including a handful here in Michigan. If you want to take a walk in this slice of history, you can tour one of the homes that Wright designed in Grand Rapids. The Meyer May House is a historic home that is one of Wright’s most completely restored buildings. It’s a piece of Michigan history that you need to see for yourself.

The Meyer May House is located in the Heritage Hill neighborhood in Grand Rapids. It was commissioned by Grand Rapids clothier Meyer S. May in 1908 and completed in 1909.

In 1985, the home was purchased by Steelcase Inc. It was then carefully restored and opened to the public in 1987.

The home showcases Wright’s prairie-style design and even features many of the furnishings and details from decades ago.

Wright’s prairie-style design was unique as it focused on horizontal rather than vertical features. It also boasts overhanging eaves and flat or shallow roof lines.

Today, you can take a step back in time and into Wright's creative mind as you visit this historic home. Tours are free of charge and available on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Keep in mind that during the winter months, the home may not be open if public schools are closed due to bad weather.

The tour takes approximately 90 minutes and includes the viewing of the film “The Renewing of a Vision.”

Reservations are encouraged and can be made online. You can make reservations for groups of up to eight individuals. If your group is larger, you will want to contact the visitor center for additional details.
