Did You Know That Massachusetts Is Home To The Junior Mints Factory?

Do you have a favorite candy you like munching on when you go to the movies? I have always had an affinity for Junior Mints. There is something about the combination of sweet chocolate and peppermint filling that makes it a perfect complement to any film. And of course, I can never eat just one or two pieces. You can find Junior Mints in theaters and stores worldwide, but did you know that this classic candy is made right here in Massachusetts?

Junior Mints have been produced in Cambridge for the past 75 years. First released in 1949, the candy was named after a Broadway show called “Junior Miss.”

All of this deliciousness comes from an unassuming building near Central Square. The area was once known as “Confectioner’s Row” because there were so many candy companies housed in here. Incredibly, in the mid-1940s, over 65 candy companies occupied Cambridge. Currently, only one remains. The James O. Welch Company, which manufactures Junior Mints, is the last one standing.

Even if you frequent the area often, it is easy to miss. The plant is owned by Tootsie Roll Industries, who acquired Junior Mints in 1993.

Some people say that a sweet smell permeates the area surrounding the factory.

The plant turns out over 15 million Junior Mints daily. They also produce Charleston Chews and Sugar Babies.

While the factory is not open to the public, there are plenty of delicious candy stores and movie theaters where you can purchase Junior Mints. You can buy them in the classic original size, and they also come in mini, deluxe, and caramel versions. The company additionally produces special holiday editions of the candy.

And did you know that a popular episode of the show "Seinfeld" revolves around this minty candy? In 1993, NBC released "The Junior Mint," where Kramer and Jerry accidentally drop a Junior Mint into Elaine’s ex-boyfriend’s body during an operation. This episode became a classic and Michael Richards (Kramer) later won an Emmy for his part.
