When it comes to state pride, Mainers have plenty of reasons to have it in spades! We've got some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the country and there's never a lack of something to do. Whether you're a winter lover or one of those who relishes the few months of warm weather we get each summer, Maine has something for everyone. But if you find yourself struggling for good vibes, check out these world records held right here in Vacationland!
1. The tallest snowman, Bethel
While you won't be able to go see this one, it's notable all the same. Measuring 122-feet and 1-inch, she was named "Olympia Snowe" after Maine's senior senator at the time. This fun project included wreaths for eyes, eyelashes made of 16 skis, pine trees as arms, and big tires as buttons and lips. You can learn more about it here.
2. The most pine boards broken by a female using one hand...in one minute!
This record was held elsewhere until 2015 when Donna Harris in Lewiston broke 156 boards! The feat was completed to raise money for the Pink Project for Breast Cancer.
3. The longest canoe, Newport
Students and teachers at the Nokomis Regional High School in Newport came together to build a canoe measuring a whopping 149-feet and 1-inch. Why? We're not entirely sure, but there's certainly something to be said for that kind of dedication. It was measured and officially entered as a world record in 2006.
4. Fastest mile ever run while wearing flippers, Brunswick
Feats of strength are impressive, but we never considered that this might be considered an example of strength! It sure is, though! In 2014 Zachary Miller ran a mile in swimming flippers in 5 minutes and 48.86 seconds. We're not sure we could ever run a mile that fast in sneakers! The record was set at Brunswick High School
5. Longest snowmobile trip
It's not uncommon for Mainers to use these sleds as a way to get around. However, it is uncommon for the journey to be 12,163 miles long! Robert G. Davis started in Maine and completed the trip in Canada 60 days later.
6. Most corn husked in one minute, Scarborough
This might be a challenge you never thought to participate in, but back in 2015 Michael Diggins Jr. shucked 13 ears of corn in just one minute. And you thought you had skills!
7. First solo hot air balloon crossing of the Atlantic, Caribou
Beginning in Caribou and heading to Italy, Colonel Joe Kittinger set off on this impressive journey in 1984. It's even more impressive that the record still stands! While we can't be sure, it's possible that this is the first Maine entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.
8. Largest collection of umbrella covers, Peaks Island
If you've never been to this museum on Peaks Island, off the coast of Portland, you're missing out! Meant to celebrate the mundane this wacky spot has over 730 different examples of umbrella covers. You never thought you'd need to see this, but you probably want to now!
9. Longest distance ever covered by tap-dancing, Gorham
While this is not something that we want to do, it's an impressive feat! A group of 13 dancers covered 10.4 miles in 4 hours and 33 minutes in 2002. The feat, completed by the Centre of Movement School of Performing Arts in Portland did it to raised money for the Barbra Bush Children's Hospital. Way to go!
10. The largest revolving globe, Yarmouth
If you've never been to Maine, you might not know that this is even a thing but here she is in all her glory! Located in the DeLorme office in Yarmouth this was built over the course of 2 years and was completed in 1998. You can drive by and visit it anytime! And you can learn more about it here.
Our reasons to love Maine don't end there! How about the nostalgia you'll find here? In fact, one of the best drive-in theaters across America is the Saco Drive-In in Maine!
