One of the creepiest places in Arizona is a series of basement tunnels that snake through the underground of historic downtown Flagstaff. The tunnels have been around for at least 100 years, used by everyone from city employees to gamblers escaping police raids. You've probably roamed the streets and alleyways of historic downtown Flagstaff a million times without even considering what may lurk beneath your feet. Few people are aware this charming mountain town is home to a network of underground tunnels, and the stories behind them are fascinating.

The tunnels are said to run from Northern Arizona University to the town square - although it's important to note that few people, if any, have explored them in their entirety. Multiple businesses connect via these secret passageways, including Babbitt’s Department Store, the Weatherford Hotel, and the iconic Monte Vista Hotel.

Many theories exist regarding the various purposes the tunnels have served over the years. Some say Chinese immigrants built them as an escape route due to harassment by the townspeople, while others believe they facilitated nefarious operations such as opium dens and moonshine distilleries.

Some of the tunnels were used by gamblers to avoid being apprehended by the police, who often conducted raids of businesses in the area. This tunnel ran from a store on the corner of San Francisco Street and Railroad Avenue to another store about half a block away.

Other tunnels have less exciting explanations - but their existence is still equally as fascinating.

The building that once housed Blendz Winery & Bar on Aspen Avenue (which is now permanently closed), is home to basement tunnels that contain city utility pipes and cables.
