Flagstaff, Arizona Is the Most Charming College Town to Visit in Fall
With cool mountain air and autumnal hues, Flagstaff is a charming college town to visit in the fall.
Home to Northern Arizona University (NAU), Flagstaff is a quintessential college town. Between outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing and a downtown area teeming with bars, breweries, and attractions, life in Flag can be fun and interesting, especially for college students.
While my college days are long behind me, I love experiencing Flagstaff and all it offers in the fall. With a more lively vibe in the air as students return to campus, along with the cool mountain air and the colors of autumn, Flagstaff is a charming college town to visit in the fall.
Flagstaff is a popular destination year-round. From skiing in the winter and spring to hiking trails and a bustling downtown area, it's hard not to love Flagstaff. However, my favorite time of the year to visit is the fall. The air is cool, and I can take a fall foliage hike before heading to one of the breweries downtown. Fall is magical in this charming northern Arizona town, and here are just a few things you can do this season:
Where to View Fall Colors in Flagstaff
Fall colors tend to appear in Flagstaff from the end of September through October, although conditions vary yearly. One of my favorite places to view fall foliage is from the Aspen Loop Trail by Snowbowl. An easy hike, you'll be amazed as you walk through the forest of towering white aspens, their white bark a beautiful contrast to the trees' bright yellow leaves. I've done this hike the past couple of years and can't wait to return this year.
Another popular spot is Lockett Meadow, which is tucked away in the San Francisco Peaks and is reachable via a series of forest roads through the Coconino National Forest. With groves of aspens along this hike, your effort to get here this fall will be heavily rewarded with a mesmerizing sea of autumnal hues.
If you don't want to hike, the next best way to view fall foliage is on a scenic gondola ride. While Snowbowl is Arizona's best-known and most popular ski resort come winter, it also offers rides on a gondola throughout the fall. As the gondola climbs 11,500 feet on this half-hour round-trip ride through the San Francisco peaks, you'll have a bird's-eye view of the golden aspens dotting the mountains. You can purchase gondola tickets on the Snowbowl website.
Take a Ghost Tour in Downtown Flagstaff
With spooky season just around the corner, how about a guided tour of some of the most haunted places in Flagstaff? On the Downtown Flagstaff Haunted History Tour, you'll meet your guide at a point between Flagstaff City Hall and Wheeler Park before setting off on foot around downtown. Among the spooky, allegedly haunted places you'll pass by are the Orpheum Theater, the Weatherford Hotel, and the Hotel Monte Vista, and you'll hear stories about each place along the way.
Visit a Brewery
Flagstaff is home to eight breweries, each providing a cozy spot for a pint of craft beer on a crisp fall afternoon. You may also want to gather a group of friends and follow the Flagstaff Brewery Trail to visit each local brewery. Register for a digital passport and collect your commemorative pint glass at the end. What a fun fall activity!
Attend a Fall Festival
If there's one fall festival to attend in Flagstaff this year, it's Oktoberfest! Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025, marks the 16th Annual Flagstaff Oktoberfest at Wheeler Park. So, don your lederhosen, join the community, sample local brews, and grab a pretzel or bratwurst as you listen to live music or partake in the stein-holding competition.
Have you visited Flagstaff in the fall yet? Did you happen to attend NAU? I absolutely adore this charming Arizona college town, especially this time of year. If you plan on spending the night in town, book a stay at this cozy log cabin with a private hot tub, perfect for a fall getaway!
