Looking for a scenic hike in Southern California that's fairly easy, a good fit for all skill levels, and provides some exceptional views? Then take a look at this little-known-gem that will have you outside exploring nature in no time.
Located in San Diego County, Wilderness Gardens Preserve provides four miles of multi-use trails that can be enjoyed for a day of hiking or walking in a splendid natural setting. This preserve is located at 14209 Hwy 76, Pala, CA 92059.
Before you head out on the trail, get acquainted with the info at the trailhead that includes a handy trail map along with some interesting information about the area.
Taking a walk through Wilderness Gardens Preserve is like discovering a little slice of remote farm country. It's peaceful and quiet out here without a lot of other folks on the trail so you may even have this place to yourself.
We especially love this hike when the SoCal sky is a perfect shade of blue. There's something so refreshing about being out in nature without a single cloud in the sky.
Along the trail you'll enjoy a variety of views including this tranquil little pond. It's a refreshing place to stop and rest while enjoying the natural surroundings.
You'll also encounter a few unexpected surprises at this remote preserve. Home to the former Sickler's Grist Mill, you'll get to see a remnant of SoCal's rich agricultural history along this hiking trail.
Although there are a few stretches of trees and shade throughout Wilderness Gardens Preserve, this hike is primarily in the full sun so you won't have a lot of protection overhead.
Make sure to plan ahead and pack your sunscreen and plenty of water. Also, due to the extreme heat in the summer season, this trail is closed during the month of August so please plan accordingly.
Although this trail is good for most skill levels, be prepared for this steep set of stairs that may be a challenge for beginner hikers. It's a great way to get a little extra exercise while you're outside exploring nature.
What's the best part of Wilderness Gardens Preserve? Perhaps this perfectly situated bench that offers a great spot to rest and soak up the view after a day out on the trail.
