If you live anywhere long enough, you form a wonderful bond with all the spaces and places that have become a part of your life. Here in Southern California, there are several locations that come to mind that are just as special today as they were in the past. These old skating rinks, diners, bowling alleys, and even a record store, all hold a tender place in all of our hearts as they have been a part of our SoCal experience for many decades.
Take a look at these 8 retro spots in Southern California and I bet the memories will come flooding back to you. They may be a blast from the past, but they're still a trip to visit today.
1. Bob's Big Boy -- Burbank
Built in 1949, this location is not only the oldest Bob's Big Boy in SoCal, but it's also the oldest in the country. Remember seeing that statue as a kid? It's still standing today!
2. Fountain Valley Skating Center -- Orange County
Roller skating, anyone? If you grew up in Orange County, chances are you have been to Fountain Valley Skating Center a time or two. For over 40 years, this skating rink has been a destination for the whole family.
3. Busy Bee Café -- Ventura
Originally a coffee shop in 1963, the Busy Bee Café in Ventura eventually evolved into a retro 1950s diner in 1989. For almost 30 years, this has been THE destination to experience a slice of Happy Days. Jukeboxes at every table, classic milkshakes and burgers on the menu, and waitresses in bobby socks will surely take you back to the good ol' days.
4. Montrose Bowl
What a classic! Since 1936, Montrose Bowl has been capturing our hearts with its small town charm. Still around today, Montrose Bowl is a popular spot for special events and retro parties in a location that can't be beat.
5. Pann's Diner -- Los Angeles
Since 1958, Pann's Diner has been a friendly and familiar staple in Los Angeles. Owned and operated by the same family since it opened, this is truly a one-of-a-kind classic that has filled many of us with fond memories.
6. Canterbury Records -- Pasadena
The oldest record store in all of Southern California is located right here in Pasadena. Canterbury Records was founded back in 1956 and has been a long-time destination to buy all the great vinyl hits. What records do you remember buying over the years at this rare gem?
7. Canter's Deli - Los Angeles
This 24-hour deli on Fairfax is a landmark in Los Angeles. Since 1931, Canter's Deli has been serving up killer pastrami sandwiches and other deli fare at this inviting location often frequented by celebrities. If you head to LA, a visit to Canter's should be on your bucket list as it's truly a part of LA history.
8. San Diego Skateworld
For almost 40 years, Skateworld has been a part of the San Diego community. There's nothing like a classic roller rink to take you back in time. When was the last time you laced up some skates?
